Inclement Weather Make-Up Day

Houston County Schools will be in session on Thursday, May 24, 2018 to make up an extra inclement weather day used.  This will be a regular school day for students (7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.).  Buses will run regular routes and breakfast and lunch will be served.

FAFSA Frenzy

8th Grade Night

8th Grade Night will be held on Monday, April 10,2017 for next year's 9th graders.  It is imperative that each student and a parent/guardian attend this meeting at 6:00 pm.  At the conclusion of the meeting, the students will submit their request for next year's courses.

College Night

Tuesday, March 14 at 5:00 pm HCHS will be hosting a College Planning Night for all juniors.  This is at no cost to the families and every junior is encouraged to attend.  There will be representatives from Austin Peay, Nashville State, and Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation present to answer any and all questions.  Plan to attend.  Any questions, contact Mrs. McCloud at the school.

Report Cards & PTC

Report Cards will be going out on Monday, March 13.  Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Tuesday, March 14 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Parents & Guardians that would like to receive email notifications from Skyward when your student is absent, when they got a failing grade in a class, or when their overall grade has been updated, this option is now available.  Login into your Family Access account.  In the upper right-hand corner is "My Account".  Click on that.  At the bottom of the page is "Email Notifications".  Check anything and everything that interests you.

Surviving The Storm - A Weather Safety Program

On October 20, 2016, Lisa Spencer from WSMV-TV (Channel 4 Weather) along with the entire Channel 4 Weather Team (including Snowbird) will be at HCHS presenting "Surviving the Storm - A Weather Safety Program".  The program is open to the public.  The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m.  They will also be doing live weather reports from HCHS during the news at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, and 6:30 pm.  Snowbird goodies are handied out to the first 50 people who arrive.  Click here for more info.

Graduation Orders

Herff Jones will be at HCHS on Nov. 3 to show all seniors graduation materials.  They will return on Nov. 10 for orders.  All orders under $100 must be paid in full on Nov. 10.  Any orders over $100 must have at least a $100 deposit on Nov. 10.

Fall Sports Kickoff Pep Rally

Join us as we kickoff fall sports at HCHS at the Court Square on Monday, August 22, at 6:00 p.m.  There will be a pep rally celebrating fall sports including football, golf, girls volleyball, cheerleadering and the marching band.  Come and join the fun!  Go IRISH!!

Chess Club Meeting

There will be a Chess Club Meeting after school on Wednesday, August 17, from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m.  Anyone interested in being in the Chess Club is welcome.

Houston County High School would like to proudly announce that we have been recommended for full accreditation by the AdvancED SAC External Evaluation Review Team. We are so thankful for all those parents, community members, students and faculty that made this possible. Without your support and input this school would not be nearly the school it is today. We look forward to your continued input and assistance as we move forward from here.

Girls Basketball Sub-State Action

The Lady Irish will be playing Saturday nigh, March 5,  in the Sub-State at 7:00 p.m. at Perry County High School.  All tickets are $7.00.  Perry Co. H.S. is located at 1056 Squirrel Hollow Rd., Linden, TN. (About 75 minutes from HCHS.)  Tickets for students will be sold during the day at HCHS on Friday, March 4 during lunch.  (Limit two tickets per student.)  Tickets will then be available to the general public on Friday, March 4, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at HCHS.  (Limit of 8 tickets per person.)  All ticket sales are CASH ONLY!    Any remaining tickets may be purchased at the game.  So, wear your Green, and make every effort to come out and support our girls.  Thank you for your support this season.  IRISH PRIDE!

Due to the changes in the TNReady testing, we have had to revise our testing schedule for the Spring Semester.  Please click here for the new testing dates.

FAFSA Help is Available!

Do you need assistance in completing the FAFSA?  It is mandatory that the FAFSA be completed by Feb. 15, 2016 for all students wishing to receive the TNPromise.  Help is available.  Nashville State Community College-Waverly Campus is offering two FREE workshops to help families complete the FAFSA before the Feb. 15 deadline.  The first workshop is Wednesday, Feb. 3 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Waverly campus.  The second workshop is offered on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  This is free and available to everyone.  For more information and a list of items to bring call 931-296-1739.

TNPromise 1st Mandatory Meeting

The 1st mandatory meeting for TNPromise will be held on January 27, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. in the HCHS Forum.  Every student wishing to receive the TNPromise is required to attend.  Failure to attend will result in loosing the TNPromise. 

Abby Dew Recognized

There will be a special recognition honoring Ms. Abby Dew, recipiant of the 2014-2015 Class A Ms. Basketball.  The recognition will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 between the girls and boys basketball games.  The girls games starts at 6:30 p.m. so come out for an evening of Fighting Irish basketball and honor one of our own.  Go Irish!!


No school on January 18 in observance of MLK Day.  All students return on January 19.

Attention Seniors!

On November 13, at 12:30 p.m., Herff Jones will be at the school to meet with seniors and show graduation materials and hand out order forms.  Graduation orders will be placed on November 20 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  If your order is less than $100, you will need to pay in full.  If your order is greater than $100, you must pay a deposit of at least $100 with cash, check, or credit card Remember that in order to participate in graduation each senior must have a cap, gown, tassel, and diploma cover (all sold as one unit).  The gowns will be different this year, so students will not be able to use borrowed caps & gowns.

TNPromise Deadline

OCT 20 - Parent -Teacher Conferences

Don't forget that Oct. 20 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. will be the first Parent/Teacher conferences of the 2015-2016 school year.

Financial Aid Workshop for Parents

OCT. 20 at 5:30 p.m. there will be a Financial Aid workshop for parents of 11th and 12th graders.  This is an especially informative workshop for the 12th grade parents..  It will address questions on TNPromise, grants, HOPE scholarship, and even the FAFSA.  Please mark your calendar to attend.

Fall Break - OCT 5-16

Fall Break is October 5 - 16.  Students return to classes on Oct. 19.

College App./TNPromise App Day

On October 1, all seniors will be given the opportunity to go online to apply to colleges and also apply for the TNPromise.  Representatives for TSAC, Nashville State Community College, and others will be available to assist the students in completing these applications.  The students will be briefed on student loans, grants, and other forms of financial assistance to help them make informed descisions on post-secondary education.  In support of this eventful day, the faculty, staff, and student body are encouraged to wear shirts or sweatshirts/hoodies in support of their favorite college/university.


All 10th graders will be taking the PLAN on Sept. 30.  This test is a "Pre-ACT" so the students will know of areas they need to improve on before taking the actual ACT.  The results of the PLAN can also help students qualify for Dual Enrollment classes their 11th and 12th grade years.

Mid-term/Benchmark Exams - End of 9 weeks

Coming up this week are the Mid-term/Benchmark Exams.  1st and 3rd block exams are on Wednesday, Sept. 23 (during regular class time).  2nd and 4th block exams are on Thrusday, Sept. 24 (during regular class time).  The last day of this 9 weeks is Friday, Sept 25.

Upward Bound Taking Applications

Tri-County Upward Bound is currently taking applications for enrollment into their program.  Although they are especially looking to enroll 9th graders, so they are able to benefit from the program all 4 years of high school, 10th graders may also be taken into consideration.    Houston County High School has been in partnership with the Tri-County Upward Bound program for 15 years.For more information on the Tri-County Upward Bound program, click here.

Homecoming Day

FBLA will be selling glow sticks, necklaces, and braclets on Sept. 18, "Rave" Day.   Prices will range from $0.50 up to $2.00.  Every student who purchases a Mr. Student Body ticket will receive a free glow in the dark armband.

Athletics in Irish Country!

Athletics in Irish County this week!  The first the Women's Volleyball team kick off with a match at home vs. Kenwood (JV @ 5:00p.m., V @ 6:00 p.m.) on Monday, August 17. The Football team kicks off with their season with a home game on Friday, August 21 @ 7:30 p.m. vs. East Robertson.  Come on out and support the Fighting Irish.  Check the school calendar for games and matches.

Class A Miss Basketball

Congratulations to Abbey Dew who was selected as 2015 Division I Class A Miss Basketball.  We are so proud of you and the rest of the Fighting Irish Girls' Basketball Team and your accomplishments this season.

Miss Basketball Finalist

Abby Dew, senior on the Fighting Irish girls' basketball team, has been named as one of three Miss Basketball for single A.  The final selection will be announced after the 3:30 p.m. (central time) Championship basketball game in Murphy Center at MTSU on Sunday (March 8).  Good luck Abby!  We are so proud of you.


Congratulations to the Fighting Irish girls' basketball team!  The Fighting Irish girls' team, coached by Sam Young, will be heading to Mufreesboro this week to compete in the State Basketball Tournament.  Having an extremely sucessful season, the girls' have already secured the District 10A championship, the Region 5A championship, and the sectional championship.  NOTE:  The quarterfinals game has been postponed and the girls will be playing in Murphy Center at MTSU this Friday (March 6) at 12:30 p.m. (central time).  The semifinals game has been moved to Saturday (March 7) at 6:00 p.m. and again in the State Championship Final Game on Sunday (March 8) at 3:30 p.m.  Go Irish!

Friday - Dec. 19 - make-ups

Students are not allowed to leave during the middle of an exam period, even if they have completed their own exam.  Students may leave school at the end of the testing period or at the end of the school day.  If a student is exempt from an afternoon exam, they DO need a note to leave early. They cannot simply walk out of the school, they still need to sign out –which means they need a note.

HCHS Basketball Season

It's Basketball time at HCHS!  Come out and support the Fighting Irish and the Lady Fighting Irish.  First game of the season tips off at 6:00 p.m. at HCHS vs. Perry Co.  Then Friday, Nov. 14, come and see the Irish against Summertown at 3:30 p.m. and Forrest at 6:00.  Let's go Irish!

Financial Aid Workshop

October, 21, 2014, at 5:00 p.m., there will be a financial aid workshop presented by a representative from Tennessee Student Assistance Corp.  The workshop will also address any questions parents may have about the TNPromise.  A letter was sent home with all seniors on Monday, Oct. 20.  A copy of the letter can be viewed by clicking here.

Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for HCHS Band

The HCHS Band will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, September 5 before that night's home football game.

It will be from 4-6:30 in the cafeteria.  The cost is $5 and will include spaghetti, bread, salad, drink, and dessert.

High School Field Testing Family Access

Starting Aug. 25, the high school will be “field testing” the Family Access in Skyward, the new student management system.  Family Access logins and passwords were released to parents/guardians who provided us with their valid email addresses.  If you signed the Acceptable Use Policy and turned it in during orientation, provided us with a valid email address, but did not receive an email notification today, please contact Mrs. McCloud or send an email to hchighschool@k12tn.net.

Reward School Cusp List

Congratulations Mrs. Jolly, HCHS Faculty & students!  HCHS is on the State Department Reward School Cusp List for performance.  This list is defined as schools that were in the top 6-10 percent of schools for performance measured by a 1 year success rate.  This is quite an honor and we are proud of this accomplishment!

Are You Ready for some Basketball?

Are you ready for some Basketball?  That's right!  The Fighting Irish and Lady Fighting Irish hit the floor Tuesday, Nov. 12, to kick off the 2013-2014 Basketball season at Perry Co.  Then this weekend, they will travel to Forrest to participate in a weekend tournament and finally traveling to Waverly on Tuesday, Nov. 19 and hosting Montgomery Central in the first home game of the season on Friday, Nov. 22.  So, come on out and support those Fighing Irish!

Herff-Jones will be taking senior graduation orders on Nov. 8, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Seniors received order packets on Nov. 1, but there are extras in the front office.

HCHS Student Receives an Award

 In partnership with Titans Radio, TEA President, Kara Summerford, presented Ashley Spurgeon with the TEA Scholar Athlete Award.  Ashley is a senior and a member of the softball team.  Ashley was also recognized during the Sept. 22 Titans football game on Titans Radio.

HCHS Student Selected as TEA Scholar Athlete

  Ashley Spurgeon was selected as TEA Scholar Athlete.  The announcement will be made on Titans Radio during the Titans game on Sunday, Sept. 22 (Titans vs. Chargers - game time 12:00 p.m.).  Then on Monday, Sept. 23, TEA President, Gera Summerford, will visit HCHS to present Ashley with a plaque in honor of this special recognition.  Congrats Ashley!


The PLAN exam will be given to all 10th graders on Sept. 24.

Irish Bookstore

The Irish Bookstore will be opening for business July 31.  The store will be open 7:30 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. each week day.  Basic school supplies will be available including binders, loose paper, dividers, 3-prong folders, white-out, pens, pencils, and flash drives.

Election Results are in!

Student Council and Class Officers for 2013-2014 have been selected.  The 2013-2014 Student Council President is Paige Rumfelt, President-Elect is Jessie Fish, and Secretary is Brenna Hibbler.  The sophomore representatives are Dalton Cary and Mary P. Gill, junior representative is Madyson Middleton, and senior representatives are Jacy Skelton and Beth Rumfelt.  The 2013-2014 Class Officers were also selected.  The sophomore president is Mason Jones, vice-president is John Thomas Fussell, and secretary is Galen Ross.  The junior president is Harley Bryant, vice-president is Madyson Middleton, and secretary is Abbey Dew.  The senior president is Hannah Finley, vice-president is Caulder Taylor, and secretary is Savannah Beard.  Congratulations to everyone!

Correction on 9th Grade Honors English Summer Reading

Due to a shortage of books, the 9th grade Honors English summer reading selection has changed.  The students will be required to read Animal Farm by George Orwell and Night by Elie Weisel.  A Separate Peace by John Knowles has been removed from the list.  Students who signed up for Honors English 9 will receive their copies of the summer reading selections and the writing assingments the week of April 22 at the Middle School.  If your student did not receive the books and assignments, contact the high school to ensure your student is registered for the Honors English 9 7/or to arrange a pick up of the selections.

HCHS Cheerleading Tryouts

HCHS will be conducting cheerleading tryouts for the 2013-2014 school year on April 29, May 1, May 2, & May 3 from 4:15 - 5:45.  Contact Ms. Jennifer Cherry at the high school with any questions.

8th Grade Parent Night

Spring Break

Houston County Schools will be closed for Spring Break March 23 - April 7, returning to classes on April 8th.  Everyone have a safe break.

HCHS Students Place in Envirothon

Students representing HCHS competed in an Envirothon on March 21.  The group placed third in the "Current Events" category and placed 7th overall.

Students Represent HCHS at 2013 SCOPE Conference

Paige Rumfelt and McKenzie Bryant were selected to represent HCHS at the annual TSBA SCOPE conference.
